Freeserve Broadband connection problems

I am half way through my trail month with Freeserve ADSL using the
Thomson Speedtouch 330 modem.

When I boot up, the left hand green light (USB) comes on, but the
right hand one (ADSL) blinks. It may then stop blinking and I can
connect. Or maybe it just keeps on blinking.

Once online the connection sometimes drops for no apparent reason.

Can any techies out there tell me what goes on? Should this happen? Is
the modem searching for a free connnection at Freeserve? Is there
anything I can do to make sure I can boot up and connect staright
away? Is this just a Freeserve problem or might it be to do with the
line?

Any help much appreciated.

Unless your make/model of modem is perculiar the LEDs are pretty standard.

When you turn on the USB LED comes on indicating that it is connected to the
motherboard & supposedly working (if you've got the drivers installed
correctly). So that bits ok...

After you've booted up the modem will have to synch up with the exchange &
that's when the ADSL led stops blinking. You will not be able to connect
until the modem has sync'd with the exchange so don't bother to try to
connect until it has stopped flashing.

The only way you can have an instant on connection on boot is to bin your
modem & get a router which you leave on all the time, but as long as you are
using a piece of equipment which is powered off & on there will always be a
lag (sometimes short, sometimes longer) where you will have to wait for it
to get into sync before you can connect...

Have a look at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/qanda.as...speedtouch#Q40

There are a number of sequences:
(a) USB LED is red or flashing RED, indicates USB port congestion, try
removing some USB devices, e.g. scanner
(b) both LED's are solid Amber, the modem is POST failed, i.e. not detected
or configured incorrectly. Check the driver version
(c) Two solid green LED's you are sync'd with the exchange
(d) USB LED green, ADSL LED flashing, the modem is syncing with the
exchange.
(e) USB LED green, ADSL LED flashing green continually, and occasionally
flashes red, you have lost sync to the exchange. First check cabling between
USB modem and wall socket. Then try rebooting. If still flashing green then
contact your ISP as it could be a problem at the exchange.
(f) When using the connection the LEDS's will flash to indicate traffic, one
LED is downstream the other is upstream, if doing fast downloads, the LED's
may go out this is normal.

You could also be out of range for ADSL

Hi,

For boot up connection, try adding "Alcatel Speedtouch Connection" short cut
(normally "C:\Program Files\Alcatel\SpeedTouch USB\stdialup.exe") to your
start-up folder. When you login to Windows, it connects automatically
without having to press any keys/buttons.

BTW, I started my free trial in middle of September. They still haven't
disconnected me!.

Yes, a several times. My last attempt was back in November when FS said BT
takes 30 days to disconnect.
I am not going to waste my time calling them again. I cancelled my Credit
Card payment two months ago.
