Freeserve ADSL Set-up

Hi

I have signed up with Freeserve Broadband and should receive my modem this
week.

I believe it is a USB modem and supplied with 2 microfilters.

My present set up is on dialup on a 2nd BT line. The lines come in at one
side of the room at a BT master socket which has one outlet (main telephone
line) from this the two lines are distributed to various twin socketed
extensions. I will obviously discontinue the 2nd line once broadband is
activated. My query is what is the best way of distributing the ADSL signal
to the modem.

At present I have my dialup on the 2nd line hardwired into the back of the
2nd line extension socket in the living room. Would I be better getting a
double master socket fitted and utilise the 2nd line extension cable for
the data signal all the way from the master socket or would I be
better/easier simply using the existing set up with the microfilters fitted
at the existing mainline extension socket and connecting the existing 2m
cable from my dialup modem to the microfilter and the new USB ADSL modem?

Jim

I don't think it will make a jot of difference to the performance of your ADSL
setup (which is presumably what you want to know), as you are only talking
about the routing of a few metres of cable at the end of several kilometres
from the exchange. The feed to the ADSL output of the filter unit is actually
a pass-through anyway, as the ADSL feed doesn't need to be filtered. Just use
whatever arrangement of cables and junction boxes that seems neatest to you.

Rod.

So if I hard wire the existing 2nd line cable into the back of the existing
main extension socket and onto the ADSL modem and plug the telephone into
the front through the microfilter that would be ok?

Yes, that should work. As long as all your hardwiring is to your own extension
system and not to the BT box, it will be perfectly legal too.

Yes that is the case, BT master socket is on other side of the room. Thanks
for the advice - I hope not to be back :-)
