Have a look at message "Re: Wireless for the local area" in this group
[31/10/03]

Thats ONE..
Try doing a search in Google?

Netstumbler.com for Netstumbler, a WiFi scanner.. scans Peer to Peer, and
AP's with good info on signals and if its WEP enabled or not/channel etc...
It may work with your card

Regards
Alan

ReadytoSurf is free to use at least until 31 December. Just use the SSID
'ReadytoSurf' and you'll be connected. Hit the 'Locations' link at
http://www.readytosurf.com to find out where the hotspots are.

Yes, I know I'm replying to a 2-week old post, but the information might
help someone else.

You know there is a totally free Wi-Fi access point at the New Connaught
Rooms in Great Queens Street near Holborn Underground Station. In fact when
you enter the place they advertise the fact there is a hotspot there and
even tell you how to connect to it. They are leaflets on all the tables.
This is not access through Ready to Surf by the way. I hope this is of help
to you and anyone else.

If that's the Kingsway Hall Hotel, I'd been meaning to check that one out
but haven't been in that area for some time. I've also not checked out
these:

AEC, 25 Southampton Row, WC18 5HJ
Benugo sandwich bar, 116 St John Street (Clerkenwell)
Kynance Mews, nr Gloucester Rd tube (privately owned, I think)
The Media Club, 131-151 Great Titchfield Street
groundzero.free2air.net, Hackney Rd, Bethnal Green, E2 9ED

The Walkabout pub at 74 The Broadway, Wimbledon, has an open AP (SSID:
Walkabout) but I don't know if it's intended for public access; I spotted
it as I was passing and didn't have time to check.

I've also seen the coffee shop at Foyles bookshop listed on one of the Wi-Fi
'directory' sites, but it wasn't accessible when I was there.

Talking of ReadytoSurf (which I was...), they've now got Piccadilly Circus
completely ringed. And LondonTown.com have a free AP somewhere on Leicester
Square. I got about a 35% signal near that place that sells tickets, but
didn't have time to try to locate the antenna.

Also, someone near the bottom of Royal Hill (on Greenwich High Road) has an
open AP with an SSID of 'NETGEAR'. Someone should tell him... )

For anyone who lives in West LOndon Especially around Shephers Bush. There
is a Ready to Surf hotspot in Alphabyte Cafe which is within the W12
Shopping Centre Opposite Shepherds Bush Underground Central Line. Also
Shepherds Bush Library on the Uxbridge Road as well as Acton Library and
also Ealing Library within the EAling Broadway Shopping Centre all have Surf
and Sip Access. Also the Green Pub on the Corner of Wood Lane and Shepherds
Bush Green has My Cloud Access. Also Yates's in Hounslow appears to have My
Cloud Access. So it is slowly spreading the Wi-Fi Web ! ! !

Neither Surf and Sip nor My Cloud offer free access. Just thought I'd point
that out for anyone following the Subject line of the thread.

And I hear that ReadytoSurf will be charging around £1 per hour after
December 31st. A lot cheaper than some of these £6 per hour sites - I'm
amazed that people pay for these when you can get a Net terminal for half
that price. (Yes, I know some of the reasons *why* they pay, but I'm still
amazed.)

Anyone looking for free Wi-Fi access that hasn't yet found what they're
looking for might like to check out http://www.consume.net. The site has a
map of privately-owned but free APs. Listed site details include the
postcode, latitude and longitude, and the OS map grid reference.
