The Free Routers ISPs give you

My present ISP gave me a modem to use, I stopped using it when I got a
laptop followed by a second PC and bought a D-Link wireless/4 way router.
Now if I change ISP and they give a wireless/router free do I have to use
the one supplied?
My thinking being I will get more selling the new one rather mine s/h.

You need to check that the free router does not in fact still belong to your
ISP i.e that in theory they could ask for it to be returned to them if you
terminate the contract at any time.

if you have problems, the ISP might be a bit miffed if you can't try the
connection with the equipment supplied.

Provided you know how to configure a router, you can use any you like.

I have TWO NTL/VM modems here and they don't give a damn. On the last occasion,
they said don't bother returning it.

That means btw, I tried them 2 times and found they were pretty crap on both
occasions.

They keep asking me to try them again, so maybe we could have a contest as to
how many NTL/VM modems we can accumulate ?

Even if it's of better performance/quality ?

I do agree though that they expect you to be using 'their' kit.

If you have a problem, you can try another router.
If one router goes pear shaped, nearby lightning strike or
whatever, you have a spare.
Your ISP's script driven androids can only help if
you are using their supplied modem, because that is
the only one in their script. And if it is not in their
script the only support they offer is "Try reinstalling
Windows".
Offten the supplied modem is crap because they buy
on price, not quality.

Yes set this D-Link up still got CD etc. and got update to suit XP sp3 off
web site.
The reason I bought my own was that when Broadband came popular at first
these free wireless routers not issued.

Thanks to others too for their replies, advise noted

You can use what you like. Some ISPs tell you to use the one supplied so
they
can remotely connect if there is a problem. They can also snoop on you in
the
same way o2 and BE can via the superuser account. It can be accessed from
anywhere which is a security risk!
The router remains the property of the ISP, so if you don't return it they
will
charge you for it.

I wouldn't call the Netgear or Thomson range "crap". Which models
were you talking about and from which ISP. I'll give you chance to have
a google so you don't look silly.
