Hi,

Does anybody know of a program (like Kazaa) to run on our internal
_wireless_ network???
Goal is to share software among 10/15 users who use windows, while the
server / backbone runs Linux..

10nx in advance..

Regards from the Netherlands,
Marco Snoek

Programs has nothing to do with the way the data is transfered.

Just use samba (http://www.samba.org) to share files between windows and
linux, it's a lot easier to set up and your distro is bound to have an
install-package for it

No, I don't need a fileserver..

Point is, we all download files from the internet to our own computer.
So if we want to be able to search for files on our local network....!!

So, I'm trying gift at the moment...

I'm not quite sure what you are asking here, but if you want a Primary
Domain Controller to store user profiles in a NT domain type
environment, with a central repository of useful files i.e. public
share, use Samba, it's the best.

If you're talking about a Windows workgroup type environment where
everyone has their own pretty much independent computer (this is what
p2p means to me) then Nullsoft Waste
http://grazzy.mjoelkbar.net/waste/mirror/index.html
is the bomb. It uses ssh with RSA keys to share files securely. Check it
out. Perfect for small groups of peers.

It seems you don't understand my question :-))

Imagine a pool of 15 users, all downloading content from the web
induvidually.
Now, we all want to search / browse eachothers stuff without having to
browse all the users' folders manually to search for a particular package.
The idea is to avoid downloading the same file / package twice, because
somebody else already has it.

Now,
At our last meeting we agreed the most simple way to do this is in a
Kazaa-like manner. So, you just enter a query in a window, and get results
who already has the stuff...

Perhaps I should have been more eleboratory in the first place :-))

Perhaps I still don't. You are asking for peer-to-peer filesharing
software ideas for MS Windows in a Linux forum? And you think this is
topical because you use a Linux firewall/router? But that Linux box will
not be involved in the peer-to-peer services?

I am not a user of MS Windows, so I would not be able to help you. I
would, however, suggest that you seek a forum for Windows users.

See my above post. Just everyone download into a share on the Samba server
and just search that.

Or if you seem intent on this solution, I don't know of any that exist
specifically for this purpose (because there are better ways of doing it)
but maybe if you run an eDonkey (or similar) server on your server you can
lock it all down just for the LAN. I don't know, I've never tried.

Hey pbs;

Thanx for this info, this is what we need.
At this moment we run edonkey2000 server on the router, and every user uses
edonkey to search/download files.

The problem is; putting all files on a central samba server makes you
download each file 'twice'. once to the samba server, and once to your local
computer.
And because our wireless network top-speed is about 600-700 kB, it still
takes some time with larger files copying it to your local drive...
So....... using this edonkey solves several problems;
1) Searching the whole local network
2) Showing all the software from your friends
3) resuming after network-timeout (Resuming is _not_ an option with M$
download,
and with apache on top of the files you still have to use some download
manager on the _windows_ client side, like getright or something like
that..)

The reason why I put this question to this newsgroup /dev/rob0 is because
our router runs RedHat, and takes care of all the routing problems /
download counters etc....
So I only assumed there had to be some guru's in here who could lead me to
my final solution :-)

Thank you all for your time!!!

Regards,
Marco Snoek
