Can you elaborate a little further? What is the nature/
structure of your network? Are you networked via a hub? Do
you have a router in your network? Are you really in a LAN
or some other configuration of computers?

Hello Jamie;

Connecting two computers via cable is not recommended. As
far as I know it won't harm anything, however, it will not
work very well.
You need to install a Hub. Hubs are manufactured by;
Netgear, Lynksys and others. If you install a Hub, you do
not, as yet, have a LAN(Local Area Network system). You
have to take the next step, and and add a Router(all this
stuff is also manufactured by NetGear, Lynksys and others).
All of this equipment is easy to install. I purchased mine
used on Ebay auctions.... very reasonable cost. You do not
need to use wireless equipment...use cable connections.
Save wireless(expensive) installation for a later date. I
hope this helps.

Oh for Pete's sake. Don't get a hub. Get a switch. Do they even make hubs
anymore? There's hardly any difference in price and a switch will lend
itself much more readily to expansion as a network grows. Better yet, the OP
should get a router if he wants to share an internet connection.

I believe the issue was accessing folders on a ME machine from a XP machine.
Is Simple File Sharing enabled on the ME box? Can you access other folders
on that machine at all? A common problem when setting up a network between
XP and ME machines is the mixed use of network protocols. Trying to use
NETBeui on the ME machine and TCP/IP on the XP machine will not allow them
to communicate. Of course you should make certain both machines are part of
the same WORKGROUP and are using the same IP mask and assigned different IP
addresses within the appropriate range.
