Hi everyone, i have just installed server 2003 in a primary school and have
a couple of issues i need help with, first when the staff or students log on,
as they navigate through explorer everything they do opens a new window, this
ends up with the kids having loads of windows open and causing them great
confusion. it works fine as administrator, is this a group policy thing
because i cant seem to find it,

secondly since the new server the teachers laptops wont connect to there
internet connections at home, they get page cannot be displayed errors. i
have tried all the usual dns issues but they just dont work, i have seen
something about winsock proxy issues with mobile users but havent had chance
to try this out yet.

anyone have any ideas, any help is much appreciated
many thanks
Paul

usually no group policy, but part of folder options which are stored in the
user profile. So if you create a Default user profile with the proper set
folder options per PC new accounts will not have this issue any more.

Did you use fix IP configuration? If yes, that is the problem, DHCP should
be enabled as the main method to assign IP configuration and options.

in this case another question:
Do they even get an IP address at home?
Start / Run / cmd
ipconfig /all
What is shown here for the proper LAN adapter?
Is it a WLAN adapter?
If yes, I have seen a behaviour with MS One Care Firewall on a Vista PC,
which blocked the assignment of IP addresses. If I pulled down the firewall
for a short moment, the system got it's IP address in home environment.
Best greetings from Germany

Hi Olaf
Many thanks for your reply, yeah most of them are using wlan adaptors but i
have also asked the ones that can to try there normal ethernet adaptor into
there access points or routers and that didnt make any difference, as to the
IP address i havnt asked that yet but i am assuming thats ok with some of
them at least because they could access web pages when using the ip address'
but not the URL.
cheers
Paul

so that sounds like DNS issue. The DNS Server entry should not be set
manual, but also assigned via DHCP:
In office by server, at home by the router, where DNS Server usually =
router.

Hi Olaf,
yeah they have all there settings set to obtain settings automatically but
they just dont seem to work, thats why i was thinking it was the winsock
proxy issue. we have done the same installation in two other schools with no
problems, just cant figure this one out.

thanks for your reply
Cheers Paul

what are the connection settings in Internet Explorer options? Any special
address entries? Still interesting to see ipconfig /all from school
environment and from home environment.
Also check the hosts file on the PCs (windows\system32\drivers\etc). They
should usually not be altered.
Best greetings from Germany
