Flaky internet connection on one laptop, LAN ok

Hello,
I've got a wireless network with a Netgear DG834G router talking to a
Win XP laptop and a Mac desktop.
The Mac has no problems connecting to the internet or the LAN (the
router and the laptop).
The laptop has no problems connecting to the LAN (the router and the
Mac), but the internet connection drops in and out.
Could anyone point me in the right direction on how to fix the flaky
internet connection. I've installed the Intel ProSet utilities on the
laptop, which is a Sony Vaio.

Does the laptop work better on the Internet when placed close to the
wireless router? When cabled to the wireless router? Are you using any
peer-to-peer filesharing apps? Have you read the wikis below?
