Fixing phoneline myself

Hi,

I'm having my driveway resurfaced and the guy doing it accidentally
yanked the BT line from the box outside the house! I'm wondering if
this is fixable myself. It just looks like a bunch of wires need
connecting that's all. Can anybody tell me how or point my to a guide
on the Internet?

My phone lines completely dead, but weirdly my broadband still manages
to connect at a quarter of the speed it used to but pages often time
out and is generally sluggish.

Thankyou

Dan Manley

A link to a photo of the box and wires may help.

This has been discussed many times here.

Basically, until it reaches your master socket, the line is not your
property, don't touch it. Report it to BT, it's up to them. I'd also
hazard a guess that if any charges are payable, the contractor will be
liable.

A friend had exactly the same problem a couple of weeks ago with Telewest.
They had the phone line back up within 24 hours, but the broadband took
over a week..!

Get BT to fix it and deduct the cost from the driveway surfacer who is
responsible.

A bit of a vague description, how many wires make up "the bunch"
you mention. If it's a single premises feed with 4-wires and 4 terminals
to connect them to, we might be able to help.
If it's 20 or 40 wires feeding more than one premise and multiple
subscribers, a little more tricky.
The pairs should be color coded, with a bit of luck the pairs
leaving the junction box will be colour coded into pairs,
Remembering that pairs are A & B wires, and need to mate up
with the right pairs, and the right polarity.

If you can identify the pairs, a common approach is to
hook a phone across each pair and see if you get dialtone.
If you do, dial your number and if you get engaged
you can link the number to the pair.

I'd hazard a guess that as your broadband works at least one wire of
the pair is still connected. If you can find that wire you should be
able to find the other half of the pair & with a little bit of
guesswork reconnect it.

Also if the wires have been pulled out you might find that they have
been broken & the ends are still connected to the terminals, with luck
you should be able to match the colours & reconnect them.

Get BT to do it, if you get it wrong you could have to pay a lot more and
this fault is not yours so far but will be if you try a repair.

Do please explain how he can get it *that wrong* ?

A single line has only 2 active wires for heaven's sake. If he buys himself a
cheap multimeter off ebay (a few quid) he can hardly go wrong given some very
basic level of competence (basically as long as he's not a fuckwit or manager
type person).

From the original poster-

"I'm having my driveway resurfaced and the guy doing it accidentally
yanked the BT line from the box outside the house! I'm wondering if
this is fixable myself. It just looks like a bunch of wires need
connecting that's all".

Note that it's outside the house, and may need proper mechanical
termination and weatherproofing, and also that he refers to "a bunch
of wires", so who knows what the other wires are doing and how they
should be connected. If he has a go and gets any of this wrong, it
will be his fault and probably expensive. It's not his property and
the mishap wasn't his responsibility anyway, all of which looks like
good reason to leave well alone.

Rod.
