The solution to this was to send it back to the shop, they confirmed
the router was faulty without argument, hmmm, very suspecious, like
they knew straight away that the router didn't work. Anyway, bought
one of BT's own routers, and suprise suprise, it works fine connecting
to BT's own ADSL line.......
