With Tiscali, I would be concerned about a five week lock in, never mind
five years.

Quite a few. They have to pay BT an activation fee. If they charge that
up front, there is no lock in (for that reason, anyway). If they don't
charge it up front, they either roll it into the monthly fee forever,
which means that everyone pays a fraction of the activation fee for
early leavers; or they charge it (or part of it) on early exit.

Seems perfectly reasonable.

The last time I looked, most had a 1 year lock in, and Tiscali had a 1 year
lockin.

The 5 year lockin is normally the downside of such things as free
installs or even possible equipment, where the monthly fees don't
cover the costs in the first 12 months.

Just remember there is no such thing as a freebee, just look on the
next page & then you see the 'hook' unfortunately b y that time you
are hooked..

Even when there are headline slogans about 1 month contract, there may be a
clause in the T+C about some "admin" fee of around 50 pounds (some +VAT)
if a user leaves within the first 12 months. No explicit "lock in" (and I
do accept they need to cover the charge they've paid BT - just that a few
go further than just covering that fee, and add some icing and a cherry on
the top, by not having yet reduced the fee to 40+VAT - it's over a year now
since BT Wholesale reduced the activation fee) but a "gotcha" all the same!

You won't get any response to emails to customer support; if you phone
them you'll be on a hotline to India, and their `fair use` policy will
mean you won't be able to do anything other than send/receive emails
and surf between 6pm and 11pm every day.

Still, they're cheap.

5 years sounds far from reasonable to me - especially with a company like
Plusnet !
