Does anyone know of a wireless laptop NIC for Win98, FIRST
EDITION? This is a home network with a combination of
wire & wireless ethernet.

The laptop is old (16-bit bus). Since it is for casual
home use, I am reluctant to "over-engineer" ($$$) a
solution.

Everything I see either has vague/contradictory specs or
is VERY clear the SE is required.

Also, I thought I could get around this by going USB, but
run into the same problem with the specs. I thought USB
was "USB" and the OS would not matter(?).

Unfortunately, no. Windows 98 Second Edition contains a number of updates
to system services and device support. That's why most devices will require
it to work correctly.

I am running a Compaq ARMADA E500 laptop with Win98 4.10.1998 OS in a
wireless home network using a D-Link DWL-650 in the PCMCIA slot. Software
installed without incident and found the Access Point immediately. Laptop
sees the other two wireless PC's and one wired PC in the network. Also
connects to the internet.

Thanks to all for the advice. I was able to find a hardware configuration
that worked:

Microsoft MN-520 (it takes 98 First Edition and sees my D-Link WAP)

My first choice was a D-Link DWL-650 wireless adapter, but it comes in so
many variations that the resellers could not comfortably ensure that I was
getting the appropriate model.

I went to a retailer (Best-Buy). They didn't have the right rev. of the
D-Link, so I took the Microsoft, since the system specs EXPLICITLY stated
that 98 FE would work.

Hope this helps someone else!

Bob
