1. Hello I want to set up my computer to be a Server (I have tried all the
wizards and stuff (I'm running W2K Advanced Server) Is there a step by step
guide??

2. I need to configure my Switch/ADSL/Wireless Gateway (Linksys WAG54G)

3. My Server (Fujitsu Siemens 2.6GHz P4 Running W2K Advanced Server)
communicates though two switches, The Linksys and a 3Com SuperStack 1100 (24
port switch that connects all my clients) the 3com switch communicates
though port 4 of the linksys into port 1 of the 3com switch

4. Should I have Two network interface cards NIC with one used for the ADSL
gateway and one NIC connected to the 3Com switch?? I only want to share
Files/printers but I don't know how to get DNS/DHCP to work.

5. My Linksys uses DHCP to give each machine a Internet connection (And so I
can use VNC (so I don't need 10 Monitors, keyboards and mice!!) how do I
make each machine connect to the Active directory???) and what should I type
in to those machines Local area connections properties????

6. My active directory name is TESTDNSSDOMAINNAME is that too long and can I
change it easily???

7. I just want each machine to have internet, files and printers, I don't
need really anything else like shared Apps.

8. At the moment my clients can't find the server or the printer!!

9. the microsoft server site seems like and advert for win2003 server, does
anyone have a direct link? perhaps to a FAQ????

1. this pages have Microsoft how to collections, http://www.howtonetworking.com/articles/msadhowto.htm
2. The normal way should be the internet + the ADSL + gateway + Switch.
3. I would install DHCP and DNS in the DC.

Don't send e-mail or reply to me except you need consulting services. Posting on MS newsgroup will benefit all readers and you may get more help.

The problem is Active Directory. The Linksys could handle Internet
access and DHCP for the LAN without AD. But once you introduce AD this
method fails. AD depends on DNS. If your clients are configured to use the
Linksys or your ISP for DNS they will not find the AD SRV records, which are
in the local DNS server.

There are two basic setups that work. You can leave the server with one
NIC using the Linksys as its default gateway (as the workstations do) or you
can make the server the default gateway and connect it to the Linksys via a
second NIC. This second method is essential if you want to monitor or filter
traffic at the server or run something like ISA server.

With either method, you need to modify DHCP and DNS.

1. The clients need to use the local DNS server, not the Linksys or your
ISP. Otherwise they don't see the AD records.

2. Your DNS needs to forward to a public DNS (such as your ISP) so that it
can resolve "foreign" URLs as well as handle the local requests.

Also, you should not use a single label domain name. See:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;300684

And, yes - it's too long - if you use more than 15 characters the NetBIOS
name will be truncated.
