In this instance, the usually good advice not to mess with firmware unless
you're having a problem is not necessarily the best answer. I also had an
early-model WRT54G and updated the firmware. I'm glad I did.
Depending on just how old your existing unit/firmware is, you may get a whole
bunch of important new capability -- like a better firewall in the router and
WPA (instead of WEP) security (added in ver. 1.30.1).
Do it -- but do a little research on the Linksys website first (a list of
changes is at
http://www.linksys.com/download/vertxt/wrt54g_ver.txt). And mind
the warnings not to attempt a firmware upgrade over a wireless connection.
