John:
Thanks for your helpful post. I"ve been exchanging emails with DLink's
tech support, and have been feeding them "progress" reports as I've
gone through this and the attendant troubleshooting steps.
I enabled WPA-PSK on the router, and the laptop started dropping out
immediately. A desktop unit with a DLink wireless card did not
experience any dropouts. In both cases, the connection was managed
with XP's WZC.
Per DLink's suggestion, I changed the channel, reoriented the router,
changed to WEP, and nothing resolved the problem. I was able to
mitigate the problem a bit by opening up a DOS box with a continuous
PING to another node (wired) on my network.
Finally, I shut down WZC and reconfigured WEP on the router and the
laptop (using DLinks utility); on first reconnect, it still dropped
out, but the reconnect was almost invisibly fast - no actual
"disconnect" message. After rebooting, I don't think its dropped once
- and no PING -t in sight. The desktop machine, however, couldn't
connect with the reconfigured WEP; again, dropping WZC and using the
DLink utility, followed by a reboot, solved the problem. Now both
clients are happy, albeit with less security than I'd like.
Although it would probably be smart for me to drop back down to 1.03
on the firmware, I do believe what I've seen here strongly suggests
some problems with WZC (no surprise here, I suppose)...
I am continuing to experiment, because I don't want to leave my setup
with WEP only. I'll advise any news or progress.
Thanks again for help, John.
