i read about a Linksys firmware crack enabling the wireless router to send
at a higher power. any such cracks for belkin wireless stuff? any
interesting tools to measure wireless performance besides netstumbler (which
appears to interfere with my wireless setup)

This is the info I got on the subject:

The ping hack is done as follows:
1. Go to the System tab of the router config.
2. Hit the "ping test" button.
3. Anything that is included in the "IP Address or Domain Name" box will be
executed once you hit ping, providing the command is enclosed with ` `
marks, ie `/usr/sbin/wl -i eth2 txpwr 84`

So, try it. I set it to txpwr 1, and the signal almost died. I tried
different values all the way up to 84, and the signal quality bars increased
as well.

Anyone out there with some educated guesses as to why Linksys would ship it
out at less than half of its potential transmission power?

My concerns are about legality, and also about potentially frying the router
by "overclocking" it.

So, I tried it and it appears to have helped my connection somewhat.

Go to Administration then diagnostics to do this.

Anyone have more specifics on this?

Can it apply to the underpowered BEFW11S4?

Will it cook the circuitry?

The transmission power is legally required to be under varying limits, in
varying countries.
It's unlikely that the mini-PCI card that actually has the modem on would
be designed in such a way that it could be physically damaged by anything
the software could do.

Also, higher power is not always good.
It means bad people can pick up your network from further away, and you
will interfere with neighbours.

Well, it's not out of the question. After logging into your BEFW11S4, add
"weca.htm" after the IP address (ie. "http://192.168.1.1/weca.htm") and see
what happens. Apparently can change your router between USA and Japan. I'm
not sure what the other options do.

At least this works on a version 3.2 router.

I'm sure there are other web pages hidden inside that box.

I did a scan of code.bin from the firmware update. you can see "weca.htm".
Unfortunately I didn't see anything else that looked new or interesting.
