Hello, one question:

How tough would it be to connect a couple of local 1394 enabled clients to
an existing ethernet LAN ?

Thanks.

Need more info tbh. It'll almost certainly be easier and cheaper to just
put a couple of £10 ethernet cards into them, if you're thinking of some
kind of 1394 to Ethernet converter.
I use 1394 to connect two PCs (Asus A7N8X deluxe 2.0 mobos,
OS=WinXP) together for peer-peer filesharing - this worked 'straight
out of the box' using a cheap firewire cable and gives me 30+ Megabytes
per second. It's actually a bit quicker to copy a 4GB file to the other PC
than to another folder on the same drive. I know that's not what you
asked, but..

Go to shop. Buy a couple of £5 10/100 NICs plus £2 patch leads.

I was thinking of something more like a chap-o-matic firewire shwitch / hub
with an ethernet link, cascade that with present switch and viola!

30+ ? Shouldn't that be closer to 50+ MB (for 400Mb 1394) ?

Thanks for reading.

I think it does peak somewhere around that, but never drops below 30.
Probably more limited by HD access speed. I've not really bothered
to check, as I'm just into the ergonomics of it - I can wait for a couple of
minutes or so while a huge file is copied over, but the 10mins+ it used to
take over 100mb/s ethernet really pi**ed me off!
Hope you manage to find something suitable, but haven't come across
anything like that.

AFAIK XP has a built in firewire "LAN" driver and can use it for IP.

Got an HP laptop where it shows up - but nothing to plug into it so never
tried it.....
