Can anyone give me guidance over the correct use of firewalls in conjunction
with my netgear router. I have been having problems with my internet access
and belive that I simply have too many firewalls sitting in the way of my
internet connection. I found that The router firewall was on. The Firewall
provided with Windows XP. and the firewall that comes in a internet security
package provided by my ISP. What should or should not I have enabled.

Thanks so much

Stephen

Good!
For the average homeuser it is suggested blocking both TCP and UDP ports
135 ~ 139 and 445 on routers which will not do this automatically.
And:
Implement Countermeasures against DNSChanger.

Keep it activated, it won't do any harm or interfer with your Internet
connection.

Disable the firewall that comes with the security package provided by your
ISP.

Hello Stephen:

You have probably identified the solution yourself! Many in the malware
newsgroups take a dim view of Internet type security suites. They would
rather see users going with individual solutions. e.g. get Avira, AVG,
Avast or Nod32 for just antivirus protection. (Most of those are free)
Reasoning: The individual applications have fewer post install problems.

For the remainder of the nasties, MBAM and SAS are currently heading the
list in popularity. Although some would also have you install a
personal firewall like Comodo and the like, others will suggest you just
keep Microsoft's XP firewall up and use it wisely.

If you're using SofPro's PCguard, it might be best to uninstall it.

Thank you very much.

I'll do those things. The security package provided by my UK cable internet
package, Virgin media has actually been a real pain so I will gladly
unistall it!
