How to find connection speed using alcatel speedtouch on linux

I am using the alcatel green modem on linux to connect to my ISP and I
was wondering how I could find out what speed I am connected at? The
reason is I have just gone on to adslmax and the speeds vary wildly so
I was interested to see what speeds they are trying my line at.
