Filter Sqeaks

I have a broadband service through Virgin.net and have installed line
splitters/filters.

Sometimes, overnight (01:00-05:00) the filters beep as if somebody is
trying to use the line, although the phone doesn't actually ring.

This can repeat several times.

Is this likely to be caused by something happening at the exchange, or
what else may be causing this annoying feature?

The local exchange does a automatic line check on every line usualy
early morning, i heard this check should update BT's BB line checker
and its database - I could be wrong.

The FILTERS make a noise? Not the phone?
I cant think what there is in an ADSL filter that could produce a sound.

Indeed. If the filter's beeping I'd say something is seriously wrong!

So far there's no sign of anything damaging going on. Both phones and
my ADSL router are okay, although the latter is fed via a phone-line
surge protector.
