Filesharing between XP Pro PC and Vista laptop?

Hi,

I have a home PC running XP Pro. This hosts my broadband connection (I
use a Netgear DG834 wireless router/access point). I used to have a HP
laptop also running XP Pro and this was able to share my internet
connection and also access shared folders and files on my home PC.

I've just bought a new HP laptop which came pre-installed with Vista
Home Premium and I'm having a devil of a job configuring it. I managed
to get it to share the internet connection, but it couldn't see the
shared folders on my home PC. I've tweaked around with the network
settings and now it has lost the ability to access the internet. It's
driving me mad! Does anyone have any advice or can point me at useful
guides for how to set it up?

I hate the way that Vista disguises all the functions in "nice user-
friendly" language rather than just letting me get at the settings.

Cheers,

M

Not sure how you've got this set up, or whether you understand how
you've got it set up, but your router should be hosting and sharing
your internet connection, not one of your PC's. Do you have to have
the PC on for other users to connect to the internet?

The first time I used Vista it was for a friends PC, they had a
printer on a Vista machine and wanted it shared across the network
along with a shared folder on the Vista machine. I found it all pretty
similar to XP, unsurprisingly.

That sounds familiar.

Make sure you turn on network discovery and also that they are both on
the same workgroup.

It sounds possibly, that by sharing the internet connection, you have set
your laptop up as a router. You need to disable all internet sharing on both
computers, make sure both are on the same workgroup. Create a folder, and
then right click and share it.

go to your xp machine, and chances are you can access it via network
neighbourhood. If you have any third party firewall ie, norton shit security
or MacApileofshite security then you might want to disable them while trying
to get it to work (on both machines).

The surely your router "hosts" your broadband connection?

I had no such troubles with vista. Plugged in a LAN cable, change the
workgroup to the same as the other PCs and they can all see each other
fine in vistas "network and sharing center".

I've just (about an hour ago) managed to get my Vista laptop "seeing"
the W2K desktop which has the router due to one of these very two
suggestions.

I suspect it was the latter in my case.

The W2K desktop has a router? WTF are people doing to their PC's?
