Hi,

I have the following setup in my office:
WinNT Server (set up as a domain controller)
2 WinXP Pro machines
1 Win2K machine
1 Win98SE machine

All of the machines have the same basic specs, P3 1Ghz, except for one which
is a P3 500 and one of the P3 1Ghz has 512MB SDRAM (the others have 256).
All three XP/2K machines are running NTFS, and all machines have all the
security patches installed.

I have a shared folder, mapped to F:\ on the NT Server. The folder has
approximately 4-500 word documents. When I'm in MS Word and open that
folder it takes the XP and 2K machines a long time to load, a few seconds,
whereas the 98SE machine does it almost instantly.

I'm trying to figure out why this is the case and what I can do to rectify
it. This is something which is done on my machines dozens of times a day
and is quite annoying. I've tried the KB but haven't been able to find
anything.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Adam

Adam,

This sounds like a local DNS thing. I am not sure what the
exact problem is, but we have had similar issues.
It may be an idea to go iver your DNS settings with a fine
toothcomb.

Turn off the file indexing service in XP. I'm too lazy to post a link, just
do a google for "XP, file indexing service."

You're welcome.

Tweek.

Hey Jim,

Thanks, I'll give it a shot and play around with it. I hope it's a DNS
issue, because this is driving my dad (and therefore me) nuts.
