I have a small home network, with the following components:
ADSL2 modem (Freebox v4) - Netgear RP614 router connected via 100BT cable to
computer A (running XP Home edition SP2) and to Netgear WG602 WiFi access
point. Computers B (XP Home edition SP2) and C (W98SE) access the network via
WiFi (Netgear WG311 adapters).
The problem is the following: the signal received by computer C is rated as
65 % by the Netgear utility. Nevertheless the connection to Internet is very
good, and I routinely achieve file transfer speeds between 800 kbs and 2 Mbs
when accessing a remote site using FTP file transfer protocol (WS-FTP).
Computers A and C have no trouble sharing and remotely opening files and
directorys, network shares and remote printers are mounted smoothly at boot
time. However, transfer via Windows file sharing between computers A and C
is exceedingly slow (a few kbs)as soon as the size of the file is over a few
hundreds of ko. This is the case either way (A to C or C to A). Very often,
the computers freeze during the process, and have to be rebooted. I tried
disabling the anti-virus, and also using FTP between the two machines: the
result is the same.
Has anyone an idea ? Thank you in advance !
