i just set up a network (2 computers) for my wife & I. I'm running a MS
router & card on the main computer & a d-link usb adapter on the other. I'm
able to access the internet from both & also share printers, BUT I can't get
access to any files on the main computer. I've gone through all the file
sharing instructions & both computers are set to share all files/drives &
printers. When I try to access files/drives on the main computer, all the
folders show "empty" & I get a message that i'm not authorized. I am the
administrator on both computers. i need help

Obvious question, Jim. Have you shared the folders within Windows Explorer?
Just having File and Printer Sharing enabled won't give you access. The
next step is to select the actual folders or files you want to share.

Chris, i selected the 'C' drive to share in Explorer since that seemed to be
an option in the material I read. Are you saying I have to do this on a
folder by folder, file by file basis?

A lot of the C: drive is protected, Jim, but are you running any type of
third-party anti-virus or firewall (like Norton or ZoneAlarm) on the system?
If so, that's probably blocking the location connection and you would need
to specifically adjust that program to allow Local Area Network traffic.

Otherwise, what are you trying to share? Select something like your own
user folder for My Documents (C:\Documents and Settings\{YourUserName).
After you finish the right-click/Sharing and Security... setup, give it a
unique name, and make sure to enable the "Allow network users to . . ." in
the Properties of the sharing. Restart both systems.

It is, Jim, and I can tell you without even knowing what type of computer
you have. 8-) Your Favorites list, huh? Open Internet Explorer, go to
File/Import and Export.... and follow the lead of the wizard to Export them.
During the process, you can copy them wherever you want, so pay attention to
where you place them. Since you're networked, you can even Export them to
your other machine.

In the process, use the Browse selection and then the drop-down listing in
the Save in: box. You will first see My Network Places, then Entire
Network, then the other machine name, etc., etc. 8-) First, though I'd
tone down McAfee. It is blocking your LAN viewing and access.

thanks chris, i think we're getting really close now. Just to be sure before
i do something dumb, when i use the "export" feature, it will only COPY the
favorites right? I'll still have them on the original machine & will have a
copy on the new one? I plan to move them to the C drive on my machine,
correct? or should i put them in docs & settings?

Yes, that is correct. It creates a file (see IE's Help section) which you
can name so you remember what it contains, and the date you created it. You
would want to save them to something like a "backup" folder you create in
your My Documents structure. Don't just plunk the file onto the C: drive.
You'll eventually lose it. Been there, done that.

After saving the file to your "new" machine, remember where you put it,
because all you need do is open IE on the "new" computer, go to File/Import
and Export.... and then Import that file. IE's system will do it for you,
but you'll again need to Browse to the location where you saved it.
