Hi all, im new here and have a quick question, I have managed to set up a
home network using my pc and notebook. I use a belkin wireless router and
share files and printers on both machines, my question is can others see my
shared files from the internet or only those who connect to my home network?
Many Thanks
John

"it depends". Are you using username and password control on the
machines ? Is the router or firewall set to prevent Netbios over
TCP/IP traffic going out of the external line ?

http://www.netmonitor.org/tools/nscan.php can be set to scan your
NetBIOS ports from outside as a check.

Hi Phil, i only have a password on my notebook, and have secured the network
by limiting mac adresses and 128-bit WEP security on the network, is this
enough?

Thanks

I ran this test and it showed my port ftp 21 open.

If you close this can you still ftp?

you should have username and password authentication on all machines
exposed to the network really. Also make sure NetBIOS traffic from the
internet is blocked. The WEP security reduces risk of someone logging
on to your wireless, there are stronger methods and hiding the SSID
and other methods help.

Unless you live in a built-up area with lots of people in wireless
range I wouldn't fret too much.

yes, I think its telling you you have an FTP service announcing itself
to the world.

I don't get that and can use FTP, from memory you make an outbound FTP
request to Port 21 and the responses come back on other ports.

My suggestion would be to open up an MS-DOS prompt.

Type in "ipconfig".
Find the adapter that handles your router and record the default
gateway.
enter that gateway into your browser (no http or www)
If it is the same router as I have, a web-based user interface will
come up
Open to the part of the interface that handles the firewall.
If it says that the firewall is on, chances are slim that people can
see your files from the outside.

Send an email that explains your question in more detail:

Thank you Phil, when you say password and authentication do you mean a
windows log in when you boot up or is there something else?

that, plus you can also password protect specific file shares in
windows and make them read only if you're nervous.

thanks for the help, I was just worried that everyone on the internet could
get hold of my files if they wanted too, just one more thing if I may, is it
possible to view a webcam attached to the main computer from a laptop on the
network? and if so how would that be possible.

Thanks again John
