File sharing for PC and MAC

I just bought a mac and want to transfer (share) files from my PC windows
ME edition to my MAC. I know there is a way to network the computers with
plugging in an ethernet cable from my pc to my mac.

I have changed the preferences in my MAC and set it up for file/network
sharing. I now need to change the preferences in my PC for file sharing
between computers on a network, i assume.

how do i do this?
