Hello,

I have few computers that are members of remote domain (my
work) which I sometimes log into, sometimes not. Let's
assume that domain controller is not available.

I want to use a share on one of my computers with fixed IP
address (say, 192.168.2.189) to copy files to and from
using other computers on the network. So I set up share on
this computer (say, named COMPUTER1), enable sharing,
allow full access to everyone, disable firewall, add local
user with administrative priviledges (say, JOHN_SMITH) and
then type (on remote machine connected with COMPUTER1 via
MN700)

> net use * \\192.168.2.189\TEMP /u:COMPUTER1\JOHN_SMITH

and all I get is:

System error 53 has occured.

The network path was not found.

> net veiw \\192.168.2.189

returns the same.

I don't even mention that all attempts to establish remote
desktop connection with 192.168.2.189 fail, despite I
specifically opened RDC port TCP:3389 on MN700.

Wonderful. How can I make it work?

Thank you,

Andrew

If you are trying to reach the computer using remote
desktop and both client and server are behind the MN700,
you need to use the 192.168 IP address, since MN700 does
not support loopback -- BTW, you don't need a port forward
either.

If you are going through the Internet, then use the WAN IP
that is shown on the first page of the router configuration
screen (the ISP IP, not the 192...) -- and you do need the
port forward.

The problem with the network, is that NetBIOS is not
broadcasting it's IP's since you are using a domain and
there is no way for NetBios to succeed since the domain
server is not working. You should be able to set a *backup*
domain server on one of your computers for when you are not
connecting to the remote domain (you need XP Pro for this
or a NT machine). The server would only resolve when you
are not connected, and everything should work just fine. I
never did this though, so can't help much.

The people on the Windows or networking workgroup might be
able to answer this. This workgroup is about the broadband
hardware.
