I recently connected a wired network conneting an ME sysytem with an XP. The
ME system can see and access the XP but the XP can't access or see the ME. I
have tried all suggestions on various web sites. The share option is not
available in "my computer" for any of the drives.
I have reset the regesiryy with vnetbios.vxd all files are there but still
can't share.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you enabled File & Print Sharing in Win Me? You will find this on
the Configuration tab at Control Panel | Networking.

I have done all that, I have reset the registry ran through everything on the
networking help website. I downloaded the fix from the microsoft support
website , but still no luck.

It just seems to be a problem with this machine

Which always makes fixing the problem rather more difficult.

I have to ask:
1) What do you mean be "resetting the registry"?
Which keys/values have you reset?
2) What "fix" have you installed?

I'm not clear from your post but are you saying that the Sharing tab does
not appear as an option on the properties of any of the drives or folders?

What is the version of the file MSSHRUI.DLL which should be in the
windows\system folder.

Using Regedit do you have the keys
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHan dlers\SharingMenu
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetH andlers\MSSharing
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\ContextMenuHandler s\SharingMenu
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\PropertySheetHandl ers\MSSharing

I downloaded and installed the fix posted on the mirosoft support website. It
had to do with updating the vnetbios.vxd file in the registry.

I will look for the files you mention when I get home to the computer.

Thanks

Re: file sharing tab, you are correct it does not appear as an option on any
drive.

I assume the patch you are referring to is 272991 "Issues Accessing or
Using Network Resources in Windows Millennium Edition"
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=272991). The version of vnetbios.vxd
in the patch (272991usam.exe) is the same as that which is built in to Win
Me. The purpose of the patch being to repair the file if missing or
damaged and ensure the correct entries are present in the registry. It's
unfortunate that it didn't fix your problem.

Sure enough the registry files you list here:
> HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHan dlers\SharingMenu
> HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetH andlers\MSSharing
> HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\ContextMenuHandler s\SharingMenu
> and
> HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\PropertySheetHandl ers\MSSharing"

are not present on my machine. Is there a patch for them?

The absence of the entries means that File & Printer sharing isn't
enabled.

> Is there a patch for them?

I really don't know. I had hoped that re-registering msshrui.dll would
have done this for you but the file isn't a registrable file. I'll try
and do some research and post back my findings but networking isn't really
one of my strong points.

Try disabling File & Printer Sharing, uncheck both "I want to be able to
give others access to my files" and "I want to be able to allow others to
share my printer(s)", click OK, OK and reboot. Now enable File & Printer
Sharing and check both the boxes, click OK, OK again and reboot. Has this
now added the missing registry entries?
