Hi,

I am running a win XP SP2 and win98 machine. The XP is wired to the router
(DLINK DI 525) and the win98 has a wireless card.

I ran the Win XP Network Wizard on the win 98 machine, and the file sharing
was working fine. But then it stopped working on the 98 machine.

The XP can still see the 98 machine and connect to it, but the 98 machine
can not see the share folder on the XP machine.

They both CAN PING each other using either the IP address or computer name.
When I try connecting using \\computername I get "\\computername is not
accessible. Not logged on". Even when using the localcomputername.

While I was writing this posting, I tried removing and then adding again the
file sharing for Microsoft Network, and now the XP machine can not see the 98
machine.

Any ideas why I can ping but not see the shared folders any longer. How can
I fix this.

Many thanks.

Maxime

On each PC,
Run the registry editor, open this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Network\Real
Mode Net

and delete the value named "AutoLogon".

Exit and restart each PC

Hi Carey

Thanks for your help, but:
On the XP machine, I don't have a registry for "Real Mode Net"
On the 98 machine, the registry exists, but there was no "AutoLogon" value.

Any other ideas.

I ran the XP Network wizard and now the XP machine can connect to shared
folders on the 98 Machine, but the 98 machine can't still connect to the
shared folders of XP.

Thanks.

On the 98 machine, click Start and LOGOFF, then LOG back on. See if that
helps.

You might also try this:

Assuming they can ping each other, you should be able to see them manually.

Click Start, Click Run and type \\192.168.0.2\c (replace the IP address I
have used in this example with the IP address of the OTHER PC you are trying
to access) then click OK or hit Enter.

Does it display the other PC's C drive (assuming you have the C: drive
shared!)

Let me know!

Good luck !

Everything seems to work fine. I seem to loose to connection from the win98
machine to the XP, but rebooting fixes everything. Not ideal but hopefully I
won't be loosing the connection to often.

\\otherpcIP\c worked.

Many thanks for your help.

You're welcome. If you want, you can create a permanent 'mapped' drive to
each PC or drop and drag the shared drive/folder into your network places if
you so choose.

Once again, many thanks for your help.

The only thing I am still looking into, is how to share all folders of each
computer. I was able to share specified folders, but that does not give
access to sub-folders. Hence sharing C:\ does not give access to all of C:\

Also, can I have synchronization between folders. For example, for files
added or deleted from Machine A\work\, the same action would be done on
Machine B\Work\ whenver I choose to synchronize both folders.

Thank you.

Sharing C: should give access to all folders except Program Files, Windows
and Documents and Settings on a XP PC.

Just wanted to say that I had a similar problem (also involving a laptop
and wireless card, this one though with win 98) and the
//192.168.0.xxx/shared drive business worked for me too. The networked
computer was a linux box with Samba. Thanks!

Should add this maneuver be added to Mr. Holzman's page on fixing
networking problems?
