File Sharing Across Subnets

Hi, I work at the University of Minnesota, and we have one large campus
network, with numerous subnets. Is there any easy way to allow a Windows XP
machine to share a folder across a subnet to a different XP machine. I use
to do this with NT 4.0 using WINS but that doesn't seem to work in XP. I
have no problems sharing on the same subnet (using a command like net use w:
\\(ip address of server)\(share name), it's accross subnets where I get the
error computer not found.

Thanks,

Jim Steffes

With NT, why did you think you needed WINS if you were using the IP
address? You would only need WINS if you wanted to use the Netbios name of
the machine.

Can't think of any reason why it would not work in XP. Does net view
\\ipaddress work? Can you ping the machine by its IP address?

As Bill said, if you cannot ping the remote machine's IP address, you may
have a routing issue. Also, the remote XP machine may have its firewall
enabled such that it blocks file sharing or only allows sharing on its local
subnet.
