Hello,
I have windows server 2003 standard edition. I have one domain with all xp
workstations connected. I am trying to setup an xp workstation to share a
folder to the network with explicit permissions and am having trouble doing
it.
This folder is to be created off the root of "c:\" with several subfolders
inheriting the permissions from the parent folder.
I created one security group with only the user accounts that need to read
and write to these subfolders. I also need to deny this same group from
deleting these files that were created by them. How do I accomplish this??
I tried creating a the parent folder with Full share permissions for
everyone and then I went into the security tab and removed all original
accounts in there. Then added the specific group I mentioned. I gave them
Modify permissions and went to advanced tab and denied them delete
subfolders and files.
I can log in and create a file, but i cannot rename this newly created file
with the creator owner account. What am I doing wrong???
Thanks in advance.

Joe

Depending on how the folder will be used, that scenario might not work out
as well as you'd like.

Many applications save files not by opening the existing file and modifying
it, but by rename/save/delete -- same end result for humans, but completely
different process on the file system level, one which will malfunction if
they are denied delete.

That's another caveat. Renaming requires permission to delete, probably
because it does make the original file go away, possibly even to another
folder -- rename and move within one volume are the same operation.
