does anyone actually know of a case where someone managed to persuade
BT to change their fibre optic house connection, or utilise one of the
"reserved" copper lines in the exchange?

i know it is theoretically possible, but was wondering if anyone can
ACTUALLY say hand on heart that it has happened. i ask the question
as i am preparing to go head to head with bt, as i am sick of dialup.

Yes, it has happened to some people - if you have a look at
http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist...ard=btsupplier you will
probably find some of them
