fiber optic cables

My home network is a gigabit lan connected by ethernet cables. Can I
replace those cables with fiber optic cables?

Sure. But if it's working over copper, why? You'd need to install the
fiber, new wall plates, terminated it, Replace the cheap copper NICs in
your computers with optical ones for $$. Then you'd have a gigabit
network over fiber instead of a gigabit network over copper. Sort of
like next day air shipment on a Boeing airplane vs. a Grumman. Either
way, it gets there the next day.

Well there is the very short run length of copper
vs. the miles of fiber.

Otherwise the why fix what works is rock solid.
Although you did leave out the fiber switch prices to tie
said backbone to the network.

But if you happen to have a cable company who leaves
rolls of fiber laying by the street corner for public use.......
