A few questions on Samba as PDC

Reading the faq's postings and howto's I understand how to setup samba 2.2
as a PDC for an NT/win2k network.

As I understand it, samba 2.2 pretends to be an NT4 server, which means
that I should look at "Using win2k clients in an NT4 domain". What is
unclear is:

1. How will user and system policies be impacted, as opposed to using
win2kAS, since all clients will be running win2k or higher. It is needed
to provide extremely restrictive access to some accounts while giving some
others the run of the local machine.

2. Can a domain level administrator do domain management from the
win2k systems, using MS' admin tools? That is, will an MS systems
administrator feel right at home? If not, what will work and what will
have to be done on the linux machine?

Anything I should watch out for as regards MS service packs causing
problems?

Thanks.

Hi,

i can't really help you with the topic, since i've never dealt with PDCs at all,
but two thing i know from playing around with sambe:

- if you want support for the fancy M$-Features, just as their server OSs have,
please use the latest sambs version.

It's currently 3.0.4 afaik. The 3.x codebase introduced the "active directory"
stuff for example.

Especially PDC functionality requires high compatbility, so if you can
try using latest stable.

Try www.samba.org

- there is a dedicated newsgroup, where you are very much likely to find
expert help.

comp.protocols.smb

Hope you have access (you should have).

Bye

Ralf
