Fetchmail help

I want to use fetchmail to grab email from several servers and store it
locally. Does fetchmail require my server to run a SMTP server? Can
fetchmail be configured to drop the mail in to a mailbox directly? I do
not want to run any SMTP service or any other mail program other than
imapd, is this possible? As you may guess I'm new to Linux. I have
successively installed Slackware & IMAP service, and I have configured
fetchmail to retrieve my email from other accounts. It gives me an error
while using command: fetchmail -v.

ERROR:
fetchmail: SMTP connect to localhost failed
fetchmail: POP3> QUIT
fetchmail: POP3<
fetchmail: SMTP transaction error while fetching from pop.ccp.com
fetchmail: 6.2.4 querying pop.xxxxx.xxx(protocol POP3) at Tue Jan 18
23:12:28 2005: poll completed
fetchmail: Query status=10 (SMTP)
fetchmail: normal termination, status 10

system:
P150Mhz
40MB RAM
4GB HD
Slackware 9.1

That or something that can file your mail in a mailbox.

I think so, but I've never done it, so read the docs.

Why not?

Sendmail is built-in with every distribution of Slack, just
activate it.

Probably because it is yet another door into the system.

Sendmail is pretty insecure as far as SMTP servers go also. The OP
might try qmail instead if it comes to that.

fetchmail will use 127.0.0.1 to communicate with sendmail so it is not
that much of an open door. You don't have to allow port 25 on your
firewall or anything.
