Fedora Core 3 slow performance

Why are the read/writes to disk so slow in Fedora Core 3? I have seen
others state that RAM > 1 gig can cause this, but this is not my
situation. I have a 30 gig WD HD, 7200 rpm, 2 MB cache, but the rate of
read/write that I get on benchmarking is about 1/5 what I would expect. I
get the following output:

File Read (10 seconds) 679269.0 KBps (10 secs, 6 samples)
File Write (10 seconds) 152427.0 KBps (10 secs, 6 samples)
File Copy (10 seconds) 32382.0 KBps (10 secs, 6 samples)
File Read (30 seconds) 673860.0 KBps (30 secs, 6 samples)
File Write (30 seconds) 146628.0 KBps (30 secs, 6 samples)
File Copy (30 seconds) 18216.0 KBps (30 secs, 6
samples)

System: AMD XP 2500+ Barton
256 DDR 333 RAM
WD HD ATA100

Help anyone?

Seth

Trust a Deadrat user to not supply any of the spiel from lspci, lsmod,
hdparm, etc etc and thus making diagnosics near impossible.

Apart from making the suggestions which Google would tell you (another one
Deadrat users are good at overlooking) such as check that (U)DMA is actually
enabled and you have the necessary DMA support in the kernel there is nothing
we can do to help.

Help us to help you.

Cheers

Alex
