Fedora Core 2 Unbelievably slow

Hi,

I installed Fedora Core 2 on a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop. I also use a
port replicator at work.

I have disabled ip v6, enabled iptables (for firewalling) and put in the
following hack:

echo "alias net-pf-10 off" >> /etc/modprobe.conf

But still I'm seeing very poor response from the network. For example,
when I use up2date etc I see transfers at 1-4 kB/sec!

Any ideas?

P

network driver?
Bad network cable/switch/hub/router?

Don't think so. I have two machines on a KVM switch and on the same
subnet. The one running RH9 gets >100kB/sec. The FC2 one doesn't.
Although the RH9 machine is a better machine (CPU etc) I don't
believe that the difference is enough. Something esle is wrong
somewhere ...

Any clues in your firewall logs? Dropped packets?

You didn't mention what network driver/chipset/driver you're using.
And yes, sometimes a bad network cable can cause loads of dropped packets
(it's easy to check too).

3com556 Tornado, Becker's driver. Point is the network performance
*dropped* after upgrading. It was fine before then ;-(

Try downloading from a site other than the official RedHat up2date
site. The RedHat site is *always* slow.
