As far as I'm aware there is only online services available where you type
your message and the online company passes it on for you. I could be wrong
now though as this was a good few years ago when I first got Broadband.

An ADSL modem will not be able to send faxes through the normal phone
system - ADSL works on a different frequency. You will need a
standard dialup fax/modem to be able to send faxes down your phone
line from your computer - you should be able to pick one up fairly
cheaply these days.

Also as someone above posted, you can sign up to services who will do
this for you.

Thanks Redman, gosh that was quick
I was really looking for a prog where i could compose/attach my
message from info on my pc after scanning etc
On-line seems rather complicated - maybe not
Perhaps i have to come to terms with another learning curve

If you've already got Winfax, it is possible to set up your PC to use Winfax
and also have an ADSL connection too.

You really need a dedicated phone line to your PC, use an ADSL splitter on
the wall socket then send the ADSL line to your ASDL modem or router, then
send the other line to your 56k dial up modem. Both the ADSL modem and the
56k modem need to be connected to your PC at the same time. I'm using a 56k
modem PCI card ( which was my main modem before ADSL became available) and
have an ADSL router connected via Ethernet.

Winfax will search out and set up on your 56k modem, if it is a dedicated
line then you can set Winfax for always ready to receive. This way you have
always on ADSL connection and an always on fax client.

I've had no problems with any of my three fax progs and ADSL.

Regard your ADSL modem as a means of connection to a single point (your ISP)
it cannot dial telephone numbers.
As suggested by others an analogue fax modem is the way to go.
If you just want to receive faxes visit www.yac.com you can set up a phone
number for people to send you faxes (and voicemail) and it gets sent as an
image file attachment via email. Its free (to you) but premium rate for the
sender. Serves them right though, they should join the rest of us in the 21
century!

Trouble is, faxes tend to get read, whereas emails can be ignored. How
many times do you send an email to a company and you hear nothing
back? Try faxing and a reply is almost always forthcoming.

That's why I still find faxing useful.

Oh right.

Errm. One (on the older machine - a PowerPC 8200) is GlobalFax through an
old Global Village Teleport modem. On the other machine is System X
built-in fax softwre running through the internal Mac G5 modem. Plus I am
trialing the shareware $10 FaxCenter on the G5 too.
