Do you know why IIS will try to load the file favicon.ico
What is this file for?

Patrick,

That's something in the web page you are trying to load. There are many
pieces that make up a webpage, and this appears to one of them. You can try
to right-click on each image and object in the webpage, choose properties,
to see which one it is.

IIS tries to load it, because some browsers request it from IIS.

Browsers use this file as "favorite icon" or "bookmark icon" and some
also as icon on tabs or in the address bar. So if you see a log entry
where somebody tries to get that file, he just looks for that icon.

Bye,
Daniel

Through searching my registry, I found a Google URL pointing to
"favicon.ico"
I use Google a lot, but because I found this in my IIS server log (I never
browse from my server) this tells me that visitors to my site are looking to
find this file. IIS always reports '404' though.

Yes, that is exactly what I said:

Visitors of your website use a browser which tries to download a
"favorite icon" from your website.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favicon.

You can just ignore those log entries or upload a favicon.ico to your
website.

Bye,
Daniel
