Faulty router or faulty ADSL line?

For a couple of months, my router has shown an intermittent problem. I'm
trying to diagnose whether it's the router, the house wiring or the BT
wiring that is at fault.

The equipment and symptoms are:

- Netgear DG834GT router, accessed by Ethernet and WPA-secured wireless

- normally used on BT-installed extension, but problem has been seen when
connected to BT master test socket (ie all house wiring disconnected)

- about 300 metres from exchange: statistics are typically:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 7.0 db 4.5 db
Noise Margin 13.8 db 24.0 db

- occasionally (eg every day or so) the DSL light starts flashing furiously
as if data is being transferred, but neither the wireless nor any Ethernet
lights flash in sync; all internet access (HTTP, POP etc) then ceases

- even when the problem exists, the router still reports almost the same
stats: it still has a WAN IP address, still same connection speed, but
downstream noise margin reduces slightly to about 10 dB when it is normally
constant to +/- 0.1 dB

- the problem happens at any time of day or night, and I can't establish a
correspondence with any other equipment (eg microwave, TV, central heating)

- once the router has got into this state, it stays like it forever until I
either unplug the DSL cable for a moment or reboot the router

- when the problem happens, it persists for 10-20 minutes and then goes
away: ie I can unplug/replug the router several times and see the problem
recur, then on one replugging it does not occur and everything is fine for
many hours

- problem happens both when the WAN is being used and when the router is
completely idle overnight with no WAN or LAN traffic

I don't have a spare router or modem to test with, and I'm reluctant to buy
one on the offchance that it's the router that's faulty, although I suppose
I could always sell it on ebay or to one of my customers if it proves not to
be the solution.

Any suggestions? Has anyone else with a Netgear DG834G/GT/PN ever seen this
symptom?

i have an 834GT and have suffered similar problems with various firmwares,
now using V1.01.32 - DGTeam Rev. 0738 (not the latest) with fantastic
stability.

Where did you download this version from? It's not one of the versions on
Netgear's site and a Google for "DGTeam Rev. 0738" only matches references
to people using it, not a place from which it can be downloaded.

well found, joker7. not the best publisised firmware out there, but i have
better (more stable) results with it than Gati and UberGT, though not quite
as fast, and if i tweak snr high enough to (eventually) get to a new bras
profile it all goes wrong, but that goes for all firmwares that i've tried
