Tim Berners-Lee has been awarded a knighthood in today's New Year's honours
list.

More details at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3357073.stm

As a sidenote, I was pleasantly surprised to notice he and I went to the
same school!

Also, I'Il just take this chance, if I can to wish you all a Happy New Year!

Regards
Sunil

Just wish he'd have listened more.
There were (IIRC) early arguments for <img src=... to be some form of
<embed> tag, to allow inclusion of other media, which was dismissed.

A number of other things would have been nice.
Support for multiple submit tags in <form> entries, and an image
tag supporting "onmouseover".

I wonder if any script support would have been a good idea.
Forth?

Shocking! Everyone knows it was BT who invented hyperlinking and Microsoft
who invented the internet.

Yes, how terribly British to give him a ceremony and a title instead
of a) the facilities to create the system (Switzerland) or b)
subsequently exploit and manage it (US). Call me cynical but
I think it typifies our national attitude to creativity.

The terrorist state of Israel has 200 nuclear weapons targetted at Arab
capitals. It has illegally occupied Palestine for 35 years and breached
dozens of UN resolutions - yet it wouldn't exist without US support.

But didn't we invent the BetaMax video system that revolutionised the
world (or something)

Who on earth do you think pays for CERN? Would that not be the
U.K. government in part with other governments. If the U.K.
government did not pay towards CERN he would not have been their.

The thing about the WWW that made it successful was firstly that it
was simple in nature, secondly that it was available for free. The
third thing was the Mosaic web browser.

It was by no means the first hypertext system. However the previous
variants where complex and hard to learn, and very expensive to
buy.
