is it possible to use 2 telephone lines and 2 modems in a linux pc to
double bandwidth for a point to point dialup connection ? is there a
way to do load sharing between the two lines so that packets are routed
across one or the other to effectively utilize the bandwidth of both
connections ? i'm assuming two seperate dialup accounts at the service
provider. the linux box would be set up as a router.

if that won't work, can it be done by putting another linux box with
the same configuration at the other end of the dialup and consolidating
the packets and then routing them through a service provider over dsl ?

Supra had a modem called a shotgun that did this. Never saw it in action
though. A 128K ISDN modems does basically the same thing, thought the
cost of such is quite high. I see that thru IPNS it is 39.95/mo plus
telco charges for the two lines

Yes.

Yes, it's called MPPP. Most providers have equipment that can handle it
already but they may not offer it as a service (either for marketing or
technical reasons).

No, you need one account that's configured for multipoint.

Certainly that would work. With control over both ends, you could use
either MPPP or equal cost routes. MPPP is probably the best way to do this,
but there are others. Ask your service provider what they offer.
