fast/slow yukon gigabit adapter

i'm having a strange problem with a new machine here.
there are no problems uploading files to the machine but when
downloading them it's very slow.
example: 180 mb file up: 23 seconds down: 9 minutes.
the nic is a yukon gigabit adapter and the machine is running debian
testing with kernel 2.6.8

i have tried both samba and scp to rule out a server-misconfiguration.

any ideas?

Really often , assymetric traffic speed are caused by autonegotiation
problem on switch
