Failed Extended Reach Test

I have just been advised by BT that my line cannot support Broadband even
though it showed "Amber" when doing the line test. (I am currently using
Home Highway, and have agreed to sign up with them if it passed. I am
looking at their Extended Reach ADSL)

Firstly, can I find out what my line test result is, if so how? Also, are
there more "beneficial" ways of testing my line, e.g. from my home as
opposed from the exchage, in different weather, times of the day, etc.
If I have only just failed the test , is it possible that on another
occasion it would pass??

Am I likely to get better success if I go through another ISP and not BT
Broadband? Are they able to "pull strings", or accept a slightly higher s/n
figure for the line? Can I bribe someone!!??

If the line loss was just outside the recommended would that affect
performance unduly?

I am very disappointed at this outcome and would like to try almost anything
to get ADSL.

Many thanks,

John Lowe

I am sure you are, and who wouldn't be.

Stop flogging a dead horse and learn to live without it imo - harsh but if
BT won't do it, nobody will.

Somebody has to be outside of the limit ... And tbh, you can't run a
telecomms system if every line has to be tweaked and adjusted etc.

If you've failed you've failed - you'd be the first to complain if one day
it worked and another it didn't - if it fails, and you're outside the normal
range, then the probability is that you're not even close.

If you ask BT nicely they might give you some results, but they wouldn't
really want to as you'd be on at them asking all sort of questions, trying
to get them to spend time and money just to get a single line working ....
which they can better spend on getting another whole exchange enabled.

The BT 6km limit is well beyond the standard set for the transmission
system, so it might work one day and not the next , and again, you'd be on
at them complaining.

Sorry, but flogging a dead horse whilst good for the soul, is usually a
waste of time.

Obviously Graham has broadband hence his comments!

As someone in the same boat as John I can sympathise with him totally.

My line length is 5.3km but even with the new extended reach limits my line
is still unacceptable which must be down to the quality of the line,
something that I feel BT should put right.

What we need is another company to challenge BT in the providing of
broadband because then you can bet your bottom dollar that BT WOULD be able
to tweak the lines.

The trouble is at the moment that company is a long way off.

The current attitude of BT and users like Graham don't help those of us in a
situation where we want broadband of some sort but cant get it because BT
cant get there act together

Ditto the above.

I remember how disappointed I was when I couldn't get ADSL 18 months ago. I now have it and haven't looked back, but still remember that message from PlusNet!

I don't think there's anything to be done other than sadly accept it isn't going to happen - and really no matter how much you want it, if it weren't reasonably reliable......

Mark

I failed at first. Luckily I already had an ISDN line as well as the
analogue line
that had failed. I tried an ISDN/ADSL migration and it passed, in fact it
was
well inside the limits.

So it could be worth you trying to get another line put in and see how that
goes.

Take a look at this site which might give you access to Broadband sooner
than BT can deliver.
