Try Throttling your upload to 15k sec, too fast upload can saturate your
connection.

Hope someone here can shed some light.

I recently cancelled my tiscali because of slow download speeds and changed
to F2S (freedom2surf). Tiscali was rubbish.

I have a Pentium 4 2.4GHz PC with 512MB DDR Memory and still do not get good
download speeds using P2P. Downloads are normally ony about between 10k and
40k per second, When I download files from web pages the speed go over a
hundred +. My connection is 2MB.
Also when I run my P2P program and am downloading at say 25k and uploading
at 25k per second for one file I find browsing the net is really slow. I
thought at those speeds I should still be able to browse the net normally.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Janet

I have 1Mb/s download and 256kb/s upload and find that letting my
bittorrents upload any faster than 24KB/s slows downloads and makes it
impossible to use my connection for anything else.

I use Netlimiter to throttle my connection.

Martin.

Mate,

The two answers already posted explain your first question.

More and more people who use P2P (who I am fortunately not one) are
throttling their uploads so that they can download faster. Problem with
that is that these are the people who are all swapping files with each
other.

For example, if you tried to download from maggahurtz who was also
using P2P you would be limited to the speed set for upload which you
would not even get due to network traffic and latency. I would say you
would get 10 of his 15K setting.

More and more people are becoming guilty of this "leeching" attitude
where they want as much as possible but dont want to give. Its why I
dont use P2P.

Your other issue of not being able to surf the web at top speed is
common. When you have a download running constantly it is tying up as
much as it can of your available bandwidth. When you try to go to a web
page you will see a slowdown in browsing. I got the same issue when I
was downloading at 240 K\s from the web and tried to surf.

Reason you get 100 k\s + when d\l from the web is the slowest part of
the chain is you. Regardless of the connection you have coming into
your house you can only work at the speed of the slowest part of the
connection. In your case its the P2P upload limit imposed by those you
are downloading from. In my case its contention on the BT equipment at
my exchange which has meant my speeds have dropped from 240 K\s to
around 40 or 50, sometimes slower at peak times.

Hope that helps.

Thanks all.

It is the upload that was slowing things up.

I take onboard the point about the leeching. When I will be downloading the
upload will be throttled to 15k sec and when I'm not downloading or at the
PC I will share my files with unlimited upload. I think that is fair.

Thanks, Janet

P2P speeds depend much more on the source's upload capacity than on
your own dowload capacity. Imagine ten people uploading from you, each
would get at best 1/10th of your upstream bandwidth, most likely 3KB/s
at best...

I understand that. All my downloads since changing settings has made a
massive improvement. I can now browse and download P2P without it being slow
now.

I don't see my upload throttle as leeching!
My upload/download ratio at my two favorite Bittorrent trackers is always
way above 1:1.
The quicker i can download a file then the sooner i can then share that file
to 100% and more.

In fact instead of throttling my upload bandwidth with Netlimiter i can set
it in my Bittorrent client - ABC.
In ABC i can set an upload throttle which is only enabled when downloading -
as soon as all downloads are complete, the upload throttle is no longer
enabled and my uploads seed to 100% and more at full upload capacity.

Martin.

I'm using Azureus - have a look at their optimum settings guide if you are
using it - worth a look even if you aren't. Also a nice plugin to allow
scheduled speeds for different times so for F2S you can ramp it up between
1-6am. I'd always go a bit less than your max upload even when not surfing
or using your PC for other internet related stuff as it will affect your
downloads. I'd say about 80% is about right.
