on the Laptop i have (win XP) i have to hit F-12 to boot something from
the CD
but on my desktop F-12 wont do that,the desktop is Win 98SE
could it possibly be a different F-key ?

Laptop is 2002 Toshiba Satalite
Desktop is a Compaq Presario 7360

It usaully tells you when the pc boots how to access the BIOS, common
keys are F1, F2, Del. A search on the HP site for your model number and
BIOS boot order says F1 is the magic key:

Follow the instructions for "Change the boot order in the BIOS".
