Well, I'm no mega-expert like most of the people here, but the next place I
would check would be the number of programs and services that are getting
loaded at startup. There are 4 places to look:

1) Start -> Programs -> Startup
If it's in your Startup folder and you don't need it to be running all the
time, delete the shortcut from this folder. Microsoft office should be the
first to go since it's a memory hog and it's not like Office won't start as
soon as you ask for it.

2) Start -> Run
Type "regedit" ("regedt32" in Win98)
Navigate through the registry to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
Look here for other programs that start automatically for all users on the
machine. Some of these you'll want like audio and video drivers, virus scan
and firewall programs, and some other useful stuff. You'll also probably find
a bunch of crap you don't need like qttask (QuickTime), various application
update pollers (nero, adobe, etc), and maybe even some spyware. Make sure you
know what it is before you delete it, though. A safer solution would be to
install an application like SPybot Search & Destroy that will move it from
Run to a new key called "Run-" so you can reverse your decision if you screw
up.

3) Same thing as 2, but also look in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
These are programs that load on startup for the particular user who's
currently running the query. This is usually where you can try to kill
msmessenger starting all the time.

4) This one can be the most dangerous.
Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services
This will bring up a list of services that Windows starts by default. Many
of these are critical and will lead to serious problems if you kill them. The
really brutal ones will just restart themselves if you do kill them. But
hidden in here are various services that you don't need. Primary among them
is one called Messenger. If it's marked as Started, Find it, Disable it, Stop
it. It's a security hazard and will really do you no good. Some others will
stick out as clearly attached to some program doing something questionably
useful (e.g., Infrared monitor if you don't have an infrared port).

Overall, the idea here is to find the things that have been put into various
places in your system by the non-Windows programs you have installed.
Business applications, games, utilities, etc. Almost all of them want to be
running in the background all the time, but that eats memory and slows down
your system.

I hope this helps.

My first question to you would be, What operating system do you have on it?
My second question to you is what size hard drive is on it?
My next question to you would be, what processor size is it?
My next question would be is, have you been updating your drivers?
My next question would be, have you or somebody else recently installed any
new hardware, or software programs?
Next question would be, are you or have you received any error?
Next question would be, have you removed all of your temporary files?
Next question would be, How much hard drive space do you have left?

The reason I'm stating the above questions is by providing the information
above we might better be able to help you in your delimma!
