We have about 3 companies. All these companies have their own server and
domain controller. These 3 companies are linked to each other thru CISCO
PIX501 vpn tunnels.

If I ping any ip address of any company, I get the reply back but if I ping
the computer name or server name, it does not recognize and does not rely
anything.

Most of the time I know the user's computer name so it is easy to ping the
computer name and get the ip address.

I want to be able to ping computer name instead of their ip address. How
can I do this ?

Thanks

Yes, it is up and running on my domain server for my domain only.
Thanks.

Can you ping a machine in another domain using its FQDN? If you can,
you can ping it using just the machine name if you include the domain suffix
of the "other" domains in the TCP/IP settings of your machine (Advanced
Settings | DNS tab). Ping will add the suffix to form the FQDN.

Wins needs to be running and setup as replication partners between all three
domains/sites. NetBIOS names, such as using the single name, requires
NetBIOS support, but a PIX or any other router does NOT support NetBIOS
broadcasts. WINS is a dynamic database or NetBIOS names, IPs, and NetBIOS
services that a machine offers, and allows NetBIOS name resolution across
subnets in a multi-subneted environment/infrastructure.
