Well

willgive you a link to a UK supplier, I hear what you are saying about
expensive aerials being too good for the job BUT I suspect you may find they
are cheaper than the carriage from the US.
You could also have a look at Solwise, they do some VERY cheap aerials IIRC,
even a 5dbi magmount on the roof might do quite well - though you might need
some half tidy co-ax to avoid too much signal loss
http://www.solwise.co.uk/wireless-outdoorantenna.htm
Certainly it is hard to see how you are going to buy and import a pair of
antenna from the US for less than about £70 which is what you need to spend
in the UK for two cheap exterior patches.
If you REALLY want to do it on the cheap, I wouldn't be stunned to find that
a solwise magmount effort at both ends would work over this range - About
£10 each. As for weatherproofing, out with the RTV (silicon) but try to use
one that is friendly to electronics otherwise you might find the acetic acid
chomps away at any fittings that are not gas tight!
As the range is quite short, you could also get away (I would guess) in
housing the antenna in a small plastic box - but leave a drain hold OR seal
it well with a bag or two of dessicant inside. With most magmounts, the car
is part of the system (ground plane etc) with most of the 2.4 mags I have
seen this is NOT the case and they have a complete dipole inside.
Lastly, if you want to do this in a REALLY ugly way, try getting the end of
the coax, stripping back about 28mm of braid from the end and voila, a
quarter wave aerial without even having to have connector losses!!
