I am looking into the possibility of extending my 600 kbps CATV Broadband to
my son's home, 60 yards away using a wireless LAN (I currently use CAT 5
cable throughout my house).

The house is brick built, semi-detached and there are 21 double brick walls
between my study and his, so I haven't even considered beaming directly with
a pair of directional antennae (this is Victorian Britain, when they used to
build solid!)

I suspect the only realistic option is to use a pair of external antenna,
both on walls facing South West - I'll come back to that apparently
superfluous bit of information later.

As both antenna will be able to "see" each other, gain is not an issue at 60
yards, neither is, I suspect, the relative range differences between 811b
and 811h. 11 mbps is QUITE adequate for a 600kbps internet connection.

I can find no reference to any cheap external antenna here in the UK, all I
can find are references to expensive, high gain directional kit, which is
far too good for the applicaction.

Can anyone point me to a USA source of supply of monopoles suitable for
external mounting - now for the apparently superfluous information, an
antenna mounted SW at 20 feet above the ground is open to the lousiest
Atlantic weather you guys across the pond can throw at us - so its got to be
WEATHER proof or capable of being made so with silcon gunge.

TIA....Gethryn

Other way...
Extend CAT5 up into attic/...
Install wireless device onto end.

I would take a look at http://www.nodomainname.co.uk/cantenna/cantenna.htm
david is in the UK, and I think there are UK suppliers listed on his page,
as well as all sorts of homebrew antennas.
http://www.nodomainname.co.uk/me102/me102.htm might be the right thing.
run Cat 5 to the attic, and attach an external antenna.

Well
http://www.wirelesspro.co.uk/store/c...0bc78f&cPath=2
willgive you a link to a UK supplier, I hear what you are saying about
expensive aerials being too good for the job BUT I suspect you may find they
are cheaper than the carriage from the US.

You could also have a look at Solwise, they do some VERY cheap aerials IIRC,
even a 5dbi magmount on the roof might do quite well - though you might need
some half tidy co-ax to avoid too much signal loss
http://www.solwise.co.uk/wireless-outdoorantenna.htm

Certainly it is hard to see how you are going to buy and import a pair of
antenna from the US for less than about £70 which is what you need to spend
in the UK for two cheap exterior patches.

If you REALLY want to do it on the cheap, I wouldn't be stunned to find that
a solwise magmount effort at both ends would work over this range - About
£10 each. As for weatherproofing, out with the RTV (silicon) but try to use
one that is friendly to electronics otherwise you might find the acetic acid
chomps away at any fittings that are not gas tight!

As the range is quite short, you could also get away (I would guess) in
housing the antenna in a small plastic box - but leave a drain hold OR seal
it well with a bag or two of dessicant inside. With most magmounts, the car
is part of the system (ground plane etc) with most of the 2.4 mags I have
seen this is NOT the case and they have a complete dipole inside.

Lastly, if you want to do this in a REALLY ugly way, try getting the end of
the coax, stripping back about 28mm of braid from the end and voila, a
quarter wave aerial without even having to have connector losses!!

Regards:

Mark

Curiously enough, I met a cousin of mine that I hadn't seen for probably
well over a decade. Turns out that he went self employed designing
antennas.

His page is at www.antennadesigner.co.uk and he has a dipole and yagi
designer page at
