I am relly pulling out my hair on this one. I got a crackling noise on
my line and my ADSL was at a low speed, constant dropouts. So i did a
bit of research and found out the crackling is normally cause by bad
joints, so i started by checking the test socket but that was clear
and ADSL would work fine. So I went round checking all the extension
sockets. A Few did not look right so i put them right. The crackling
noise decreased to a few clicks and pops but was triggered by the
modem coming on, so i thought Microfilters. Checked them all at
another house and no problems there, i also came back and checked them
all at my test socket and no problems there either. All the sockets
seem to be wire properly. The setup is as follows:

Master socket=>Junction box=> Extension socket 1
Extension socket 2=>
Exenstion socket 3

Like i say all is fine at the test socket, as soon as i plug into the
front panel of the master the problem is there?. i appreciate your
help.

Damaged cable? Is it clipped to a skirting board, and has been kicked?
Run under a carpet and worn?

You may still have a fault on the extension wiring. This might include a
fault with the removable front part of the linebox. Have you tried the
socket on the outside of the front of the linebox, with the extension
wiring disconnected?

You say the wiring is Master socket=>Junction box=> Extension socket 1
Extension socket 2=>
Extension socket 3

What happens in the junction box?? It sounds like the system is star wired, in
which case you will not get it to work correctly.

Well One cablke runs to the junction box, Then from there two cables
run out. One cable feeds an upstairs socket and end there. The other
feeds a socket in the living room and then a cable running from the
sockets runs the the kitchen where it ends.

Well it looks like the bottom panel of the master socket has gone. I
disconneted it and the noise remains there. Next problem is who is
responsible for that segmant of the master socket. I have done a
search on google and i am getting mixed messages. I do believe though
it is illegal to replace the master socket as a whole because it is
BT's but i should be able to replace the bottom half for something
like a filtered faceplate. So what do i do when the faceplate BT put
on brand new 5 years ago when my house was connected go bust?
